Type-2 Saharan dust events

Around quarter of the total observations were identified as Type-2 events. Dust events related to Type-2 are generated by southerly winds associated with depressions centred in the central Mediterranean. The dust transport is generated by warm sector winds on foreside of the eastward moving cyclones and the strongest meridional wind flows are located above the Ionian Sea and the southern part of the Apennine Peninsula, suggesting straight dust intrusions from the south into the CB. Mediterranean low-pressure centres are developing and the Type-2 SDEs occur typically in spring, before the intensification of the Azores High caused by northward migration of subtropical highs.

During Type-2 events, the outbreaks of dust-laden air reach the CB directly from the south, and rarely from the SE.
